* Mum's 4x Great Grandparents -updated

John Bush and Sarah Studham /Studdome (parents of William Samuel Bush)

John was born in around 1738 if his age at death is to believed. This was not in Minster, Sheppey where he married Sarah in 1783, nor is he the John Bush born in Chatham Kent 1737/38. At his children's marriages he is described as a labourer.
Sarah was born in Hawkhurst Kent in 1758 to Mark Studham and Sarah nee Williams. At that time her parents were described as vagrants. She first married John Richardson in Minster in 1778 (name written Studdome). The couple had three children but in 1782 Sarah lost two of them and her husband whose death was described as a sudden literal dropping dead. She fairly swiftly remarried John Bush who was much older than her. She died in 1816,as did he.

James Hubbard and Sarah Moses (parents of Hannah Hubbard)
James and Sarah married in Hartlip Kent by licence in 1776. Sarah was born in Lower Halstow Kent in 1758 to Richard Moses and Mary. Following the death of her parents, local gentleman farmer Nicholas Messenger became her guardian. He gave consent to her marriage as required by her father before death. Nicholas was a friend of her father (and also it seems possibly a distant relative through marriage - both men had complex marital histories).  Sarah was one of the beneficiaries of Mr Messenger's will.
James was a resident of Hartlip at his marriage to Sarah. His birth was 1736 Hartlip to James Hubbard (written as Hubbert but would have been spoken as Hubbard as the letter t on the end of a word or syllable was usually spoken as a d historically) and Elizabeth nee Skinner (who was born to James Skinner and Ann in Hartlip in 1709. Ann was nee Smith.)

Sarah remarried George Sellings in Halstow not long after the death of James.

Anthony Henty and Sarah Silsby (parents of Martha Henty)

Anthony was born in Chiddingly Sussex to Edward Henty and Elizabeth nee Rolphe in circa 1716. He and Sarah settled in Shermanbury where they married in 1752 and where Sarah was born in 1733 to Joseph Silsby and Mary nee Britt.

William Geale and Sarah Rye (parents of Mary Geale)

William was born in Hever Kent in 1751 to William Geale and Ann nee Fuller. The Weald genealogy website details payments made to him by Hever Parish for the maintenance of a Mary Best. Hever sent many elderly, ill or juvenile paupers to live with other families who were paid to look after them.

William married Sarah in Penshurst in 1777. She is described on the said Weald site as numerous times receiving parish funds to nurse parishioners, including at one point her son James. Both Sarah and William could sign the marriage register. The marriage was witnessed by a John Rye. The second witness is too faded to read. William died in 1797.
Sarah was born in Withyham Sussex in 1752 to John Rye and Elizabeth née Lee.

John Card and Sarah Elphick

This couple married in Maresfield Sussex in 1748 and then settled in nearby Rotherfield. John was born in the latter village in 1720. Two couples had a son named John Card baptised that year so it is not possible to know which are his parents. As it was traditional to marry in the bride's parish Sarah may well have been born in Maresfield. Online records are not available as concerns baptisms in Maresfield. When I can look at them I will do so.

John Ovenden and Mary Hoadley (parents of Elizabeth Ovenden)
This couple married in Rotherfield in 1749. They should not be confused with another Rotherfield dwelling couple also called John and Mary Ovenden, with the wife's maiden name also Hoadley (which is locally very very common). The other couple married in Withyham in 1747. The other Mary Hoadley, not mine, was the daughter of clockmaker William Hoadley, as wills prove. The origins of my John and Mary are unknown.

THOMAS PULLINGER and SARAH BULEY (parents of Jane Pullinger)
Thomas was a wheelwright who lived in Ticehurst Sussex where he paid 10 shillings of land tax in 1798 and 1799 and 8 shillings in 1801. He was not born in the immediate vicinity. He may have served his apprenticeship in Elstead Surrey to John Ockley but this is not proven. He took in at least one apprentice himself later. His age at death suggests a birth of 1745. When the couple married in Brenchley Kent Thomas could sign his name but his wife could not. Thomas owned his home, premises and some land in Ticehurst.
Thomas died leaving a will in 1824. In that he asked for his property to be auctioned off for the benefit of his wife, son Thomas and daughter Lucy.
Sarah is described in his will as his beloved wife. She was born in Brenchley Kent in 1755 and died not long after her husband in 1825. Her parents were Francis Buley and Sarah nee Moon who both died before her maturity. Her sibling was Francis 1760.

John Warren and Hannah Britter (parents of William Warren)
John and Hannah married in West Peckham Kent in 1779. His origins are unknown but his age at burial suggests a 1755 birth date. Hannah was born in Maidstone Kent in 1756 to William Britter and Elizabeth. John was a husbandman (small scale farmer). Two years prior to his marriage he was prosecuted for fathering an illegitimate child with another woman Ruth Diprose. He died in 1835 and Hannah in 1828, both in Shipborne Kent where they had raised their family.

Thomas Brisley and Mary Mills

Thomas was born 1764 Maidstone to Edward Brisley and Ann née Burgess. The married Mary Mills in Burham Kent in 1787. During their marriage they also lived in Wouldham Kent but they died in Burham, Mary in 1806 and Thomas in 1840 (of dropsy). They must have been wealthier than labouring class as they could afford a stone headstone. This was still not something for the average family at that time. The stone is still extant and suggests a birth date of 1766 for Mary. At the time of her marriage Mary was recorded in one set of banns as a widow from Aylesford Kent however extensive research suggests that she was mistakenly recorded in that record and was in fact unmarried previously. She was born in 1765 in Aylesford to George Mills and Mary nee Taylor.

John Kidney and Elizabeth (parents of Fanny Kidney)

John was born in Detling Kent in 1752 to Edward Kidney and Mary nee Tooth.

James Bennett and Margaret Tooth (parents of Charlotte Bennett)

These two married in Tonbridge Kent in 1783. James was born in Ightham Kent to Thomas Bennett and Sarah new Halley. Margaret Tooth was much older than her husband, being born in Leigh Kent in 1750 to Edward Tooth and Elizabeth nee Knight. At the time of her marriage she was already the mother of two illegitimate sons aged 9 and 5 respectively by an unknown father/fathers. [Her sister? Sarah also had an illegitimate son]. Note: Kathryn, if you are getting confused at this point- mum also descends from a separate line of Bennetts and dad from separate lines of both Tooths and Knights.

Anne Mashman / Marshman (parent of Mary Mashman)

Anne was born in Upper Clatford Hampshire in 1752 and baptised there two years later. She lived in Wherwell nearby but was for some reason was buried in Andover with the vicar noting that she was a Wherwell resident. Her parents were Thomas Mashman / Marshman and Mary née Smith.

Next generation back for all these lines here

Parish registers at Kent Archives or Medway Archives except West Peckham and Shermanbury which were accessed via Familysearch England Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths collection by the LDS and Detling which were from Find My Past Kent Baptisms.
