Mums x5 Grandparents- UPDATED

Mark Studham and Sarah Williams (parents of Sarah Studham).

Mark and Sarah married in Newenden Kent in 1756 [Familysearch English marriages from the LDS]. At one of his children's baptisms he is noted as a traveller and at another he and his wife are "vagrants". The family moved around a lot in Kent. He was born in 1728 in Canterbury Kent to Sarah Studham. He died in the Workhouse at Milton near Sittingbourne Kent in 1767 and his wife Sarah later remarried. The year 1767 was a terrible one for her. In the space of less than three months she lost her husband and two children. Her origins are as yet unknown.

Richard and Mary Moses (parents of Sarah Moses)

Richard’s marriage to Mary has not yet been found. It was his third marriage. In his will he asked for gentleman farmer Nicholas Messenger to be guardian to his daughter Sarah. He was of Upchurch Kent at death and died in 1769. At the time of his first marriage he was of Lenham Kent. Richard is believed to have owned barges for a living.

James Hubbard and Elizabeth Skinner (parents of James Hubbard)

This couple married in Hartlip Kent in 1730. Elizabeth was born in Hartlip in 1709 to James Skinner and Ann née Smith. James Hubbard was baptised at Boxley Kent in 1706 to James Hubbard and Elizabeth née Beane .

Edward Henty and Elizabeth Rolphe (parents of Anthony Henty)

Edward was born around 1684 if his age at death is accurate. He died in 1769 in Chiddingly Sussex. The burial register notes that he was a long serving parish clerk. He married Elizabeth in Chiddingly in 1708. Elizabeth was born in Fletching Sussex in 1687 to Thomas Rolphe and Mary.

William Geale and Ann Fuller (parents of William Geale)

William married Ann in Westerham Kent in 1745 but they settled in Hever. Ann was born in Westerham in 1718 to Edward Fuller, though her family also had land in Hever. William was described as of Hever at the time of his marriage but was not baptised there. He died in 1796. His last name like other Geales can be rendered Jeal, Cheale and more. It was a common name in parts of Sussex and Surrey. He is not the William born Edenbridge in 1711 and prob not the 1725 Farnborough birth either.

John Rye and Elizabeth Lee (parents of Sarah Rye)

John and Elizabeth married in Withyham in 1751. I have yet to seek the baptism of Elizabeth. John was baptised at Withyham 1730 to Richard Rye and Anne née Baker.

Francis Buley and Sarah Moon (parents of Sarah Buley)

Francis was born in 1725 in Brenchley Kent to Thomas Buley and Prince nee Bradgate (yes her first name was Prince!) He was described as both a yeoman and a salesman (which at the time usually meant an animal dealer) and married Sarah in Tonbridge Kent in 1752. The couple lived in a house in Brenchley owned by his wife's relative Sarah Cayley. This she eventually left to Francis as well as a half share in another property there and land in both Brenchley and Lamberhurst. Francis already owned another property in Brenchley which he rented out.

Sarah was born in Rotherfield Sussex in 1725 to John Moon and Elizabeth nee Stephens.

The couple have a memorial within the churchyard in Brenchley which features cherubs holding a looking glass.

Joseph Silsby and Mary Britt (parents of Sarah Silsby)

Joseph was born in Shermanbury Sussex in 1701 to Joseph Silsby and Sarah nee Tiltman.

Mary was born in 1711 Shermanbury to William Britt and Bridget formerly Denman. The couple married in Shermanbury in 1729.

William and Elizabeth Britter (parents of Hannah Britter)

William was born in Maidstone Kent in 1726 to John Britter and Mary nee Lamb. His marriage to Elizabeth has not been found so her origins are difficult to ascertain.

Edward Brisley and Ann Burgess (parents of Thomas Brisley)

Edward was born in Burnham Kent in 1735 to Edward Brisley and Ann née Box. He married Ann in 1761. She was then "of Maidstone". He was the tenant in lands to Robert Salmon in Burham in 1798.

George Mills and Mary Taylor (parents of Mary Mills)

This couple married in Rodmersham Kent in 1754 George was the son of John Mills and Elizabeth nee Fann /Fane. Mary was the child of James Taylor and Martha nee Fryland. George was born in 1730 in Aylesford and Mary was born there in 1734.

Edward Kidney and Mary Bennett (parents of John Kidney)

This couple married in Sutton Valence Kent in 1748. Mary was born there in 1723 to John Bennett and Mary née Groombridge. Edward was the son of John Kidney and Jane widow Kerby and was born also in Sutton Valence in 1723.

Edward Tooth and Elizabeth nee Knight (parents of Margaret Tooth)

This couple married in Chiddingstone Kent in 1738. The origins of Edward are uncertain. He may have been a widower. Elizabeth was born in Leigh Kent in 1714 to George Knight and Elizabeth.

Thomas Bennett and Sarah Halley (parents of James Bennett)

Sarah and Thomas married in Ightham Kent in 1757. Thomas died there in 1814. He was born Tonbridge Kent to Richard and Frances née Wood. Sarah was born in Ightham in 1734 to Ralph Halley and Anne. The last name Halley is very prone to variant spelling and forms.

* Mum's 4x Great Grandparents -updated

John Bush and Sarah Studham /Studdome (parents of William Samuel Bush)

John was born in around 1738 if his age at death is to believed. This was not in Minster, Sheppey where he married Sarah in 1783, nor is he the John Bush born in Chatham Kent 1737/38. At his children's marriages he is described as a labourer.
Sarah was born in Hawkhurst Kent in 1758 to Mark Studham and Sarah nee Williams. At that time her parents were described as vagrants. She first married John Richardson in Minster in 1778 (name written Studdome). The couple had three children but in 1782 Sarah lost two of them and her husband whose death was described as a sudden literal dropping dead. She fairly swiftly remarried John Bush who was much older than her. She died in 1816,as did he.

James Hubbard and Sarah Moses (parents of Hannah Hubbard)
James and Sarah married in Hartlip Kent by licence in 1776. Sarah was born in Lower Halstow Kent in 1758 to Richard Moses and Mary. Following the death of her parents, local gentleman farmer Nicholas Messenger became her guardian. He gave consent to her marriage as required by her father before death. Nicholas was a friend of her father (and also it seems possibly a distant relative through marriage - both men had complex marital histories).  Sarah was one of the beneficiaries of Mr Messenger's will.
James was a resident of Hartlip at his marriage to Sarah. His birth was 1736 Hartlip to James Hubbard (written as Hubbert but would have been spoken as Hubbard as the letter t on the end of a word or syllable was usually spoken as a d historically) and Elizabeth nee Skinner (who was born to James Skinner and Ann in Hartlip in 1709. Ann was nee Smith.)

Sarah remarried George Sellings in Halstow not long after the death of James.

Anthony Henty and Sarah Silsby (parents of Martha Henty)

Anthony was born in Chiddingly Sussex to Edward Henty and Elizabeth nee Rolphe in circa 1716. He and Sarah settled in Shermanbury where they married in 1752 and where Sarah was born in 1733 to Joseph Silsby and Mary nee Britt.

William Geale and Sarah Rye (parents of Mary Geale)

William was born in Hever Kent in 1751 to William Geale and Ann nee Fuller. The Weald genealogy website details payments made to him by Hever Parish for the maintenance of a Mary Best. Hever sent many elderly, ill or juvenile paupers to live with other families who were paid to look after them.

William married Sarah in Penshurst in 1777. She is described on the said Weald site as numerous times receiving parish funds to nurse parishioners, including at one point her son James. Both Sarah and William could sign the marriage register. The marriage was witnessed by a John Rye. The second witness is too faded to read. William died in 1797.
Sarah was born in Withyham Sussex in 1752 to John Rye and Elizabeth née Lee.

John Card and Sarah Elphick

This couple married in Maresfield Sussex in 1748 and then settled in nearby Rotherfield. John was born in the latter village in 1720. Two couples had a son named John Card baptised that year so it is not possible to know which are his parents. As it was traditional to marry in the bride's parish Sarah may well have been born in Maresfield. Online records are not available as concerns baptisms in Maresfield. When I can look at them I will do so.

John Ovenden and Mary Hoadley (parents of Elizabeth Ovenden)
This couple married in Rotherfield in 1749. They should not be confused with another Rotherfield dwelling couple also called John and Mary Ovenden, with the wife's maiden name also Hoadley (which is locally very very common). The other couple married in Withyham in 1747. The other Mary Hoadley, not mine, was the daughter of clockmaker William Hoadley, as wills prove. The origins of my John and Mary are unknown.

THOMAS PULLINGER and SARAH BULEY (parents of Jane Pullinger)
Thomas was a wheelwright who lived in Ticehurst Sussex where he paid 10 shillings of land tax in 1798 and 1799 and 8 shillings in 1801. He was not born in the immediate vicinity. He may have served his apprenticeship in Elstead Surrey to John Ockley but this is not proven. He took in at least one apprentice himself later. His age at death suggests a birth of 1745. When the couple married in Brenchley Kent Thomas could sign his name but his wife could not. Thomas owned his home, premises and some land in Ticehurst.
Thomas died leaving a will in 1824. In that he asked for his property to be auctioned off for the benefit of his wife, son Thomas and daughter Lucy.
Sarah is described in his will as his beloved wife. She was born in Brenchley Kent in 1755 and died not long after her husband in 1825. Her parents were Francis Buley and Sarah nee Moon who both died before her maturity. Her sibling was Francis 1760.

John Warren and Hannah Britter (parents of William Warren)
John and Hannah married in West Peckham Kent in 1779. His origins are unknown but his age at burial suggests a 1755 birth date. Hannah was born in Maidstone Kent in 1756 to William Britter and Elizabeth. John was a husbandman (small scale farmer). Two years prior to his marriage he was prosecuted for fathering an illegitimate child with another woman Ruth Diprose. He died in 1835 and Hannah in 1828, both in Shipborne Kent where they had raised their family.

Thomas Brisley and Mary Mills

Thomas was born 1764 Maidstone to Edward Brisley and Ann née Burgess. The married Mary Mills in Burham Kent in 1787. During their marriage they also lived in Wouldham Kent but they died in Burham, Mary in 1806 and Thomas in 1840 (of dropsy). They must have been wealthier than labouring class as they could afford a stone headstone. This was still not something for the average family at that time. The stone is still extant and suggests a birth date of 1766 for Mary. At the time of her marriage Mary was recorded in one set of banns as a widow from Aylesford Kent however extensive research suggests that she was mistakenly recorded in that record and was in fact unmarried previously. She was born in 1765 in Aylesford to George Mills and Mary nee Taylor.

John Kidney and Elizabeth (parents of Fanny Kidney)

John was born in Detling Kent in 1752 to Edward Kidney and Mary nee Tooth.

James Bennett and Margaret Tooth (parents of Charlotte Bennett)

These two married in Tonbridge Kent in 1783. James was born in Ightham Kent to Thomas Bennett and Sarah new Halley. Margaret Tooth was much older than her husband, being born in Leigh Kent in 1750 to Edward Tooth and Elizabeth nee Knight. At the time of her marriage she was already the mother of two illegitimate sons aged 9 and 5 respectively by an unknown father/fathers. [Her sister? Sarah also had an illegitimate son]. Note: Kathryn, if you are getting confused at this point- mum also descends from a separate line of Bennetts and dad from separate lines of both Tooths and Knights.

Anne Mashman / Marshman (parent of Mary Mashman)

Anne was born in Upper Clatford Hampshire in 1752 and baptised there two years later. She lived in Wherwell nearby but was for some reason was buried in Andover with the vicar noting that she was a Wherwell resident. Her parents were Thomas Mashman / Marshman and Mary née Smith.

*Mum's 3x Great Grandparents- updated

Charles Peacock and Martha Henty (parents of Mary Peacock)

Charles was born in around 1775. His parents are unknown. He was not the man of the same name baptised in Thakeham Sussex- that man continued to live there. At the time of his marriage our Charles was a resident of Cowfold but was not baptised there. He was an agricultural labourer. Martha was born in Shermanbury Sussex in 1776 to Anthony Henty and Sarah nee Silsby. She married her husband in Shermanbury in 1797. At the birth of her last child she was nearly 49 years old! The couple live at Troy Town Edenbridge Kent in 1841. Charles died in 1848. Martha lived in 1851 in Edenbridge High Street. She died in 1858.

Mary Geale (mother of Mercy Geale)
She was born in Chiddingstone Kent in 1782 to William Geale and Sarah nee Rye. She was an unmarried 20 year old when she had her daughter Mercy in Edenbridge Kent. She went on to marry James Jones, a shoemaker, in the same town and have further children. Although not wealthy James was able to offer Mary a comparatively comfortable life. It is unlikely that he is the father of Mary's child as that child is not remembered in his will.

John Card and Elizabeth Ovenden (parents of James Card)

John and Elizabeth married in Rotherfield Sussex in 1774. They lived first there then in Speldhurst before returning to Rotherfield. John was born in Rotherfield in 1753 to John Card and Sarah nee Elphick. Elizabeth was born in Rotherfield Sussex in 1756 to John and Mary née Hoadley.

Cornelius Stratten and Mary Mashman or Marshman (parents of Charlotte Stratten)
Cornelius was born in around 1767 in Vernham Dean Hampshire according to his census entries [My transcription from census page images on microfilm viewed back then at an LDS History centre] Baptismal records for this period in Vernham Dean have been lost so his parents may never be known. His family looks like they had origin in the Clifton area of Gloucestershire however. He worked as both a farmer and an agricultural labourer.
Mary grew up in Andover and Wherwell both in Hampshire. She was the daughter of unmarried mother Anne Marshman / Mashman.
Mary and Cornelius couple lived in Eltham Kent in the High Street 1841 and in Queen Elizabeth Cottages, Greenwich Kent in 1851. They lived in Eltham from at least 1798 when Cornelius was recorded in Land Tax records [National Archives]. They also lived in Woolwich.

William Sherwood and Jane Pullinger (parents of William Sherwood)
William and Jane married in Tonbridge Kent in 1801. William was not born in the town and his origins are unknown. His stated age at death in 1836 Tonbridge suggests a birth date of 1773. As both his sons became carpenters it is reasonable to guess that he may also have been one. Jane was born in 1774 Ticehurst Sussex to Thomas Pullinger, who left her children money in his will, and Sarah nee Buley. Jane died by 1824.

William Warren and Charlotte Bennett (parents of Ann Warren)
William was born in Shipborne Kent in 1779 to John Warren and Hannah nee Britter. He married Charlotte in Stansted Kent in 1800. Charlotte was born in Ightham Kent to James Bennett and Margaret new Tooth. The name also occurs as Burnett, Bonet and Barnett locally. William's siblings were Mary 1782, Jane 1785 and James 1790 who both died as infants, Thomas 1787 who had twins confirming the prevalence of such in this segment of my tree, Anne 1793, and Sarah 1796. William is known to have worked for a Mr T Jervis in Shipborne for at least part of his working life.

George Plumpton and Ann Barber (parents of Esther Plumpton)
George was born around 1783-1786 (records differ). He lived only long enough to fill in the 1841 census and on that he answers the question  "Were you born in the county in which you reside?" The most likely baptism for him is in Berwick upon Tweed. Mum was told by her mum that the Plumpton family came from Scotland. According to one source George had the middle name Alexander which would be very unusual outside of Scotland and the borders in the 1700s. George married Ann in Rochester in 1807.[source parish records microfilm at Medway Archives] He worked as a waterman and a Special Constable at different times before his death in 1847 but he came to Kent as a member of the Royal Navy. He joined as a teenager. After the death of Ann he married Catherine Church and had further children. Together they lived at Ryarsh Lane West Malling on the 1841 census. George received a pension as an out pensioner from the Chelsea Hospital due to his naval service. In his pension records he is noted as having a crippled hand but the cause is not given. Catherine outlived him, working as a laundress as a widow.
Ann Barber was born around 1789 according to her age at burial in 1820 of just 31. She was unable to sign the marriage register though her husband could. I have searched high and low for her baptism, so far without success. It is possible that she was not born in Kent but joined George there having been engaged to him somewhere he previously was living.

Thomas Brisley and Fanny Kidney (parents of James Brisley)
Thomas,a labourer, was baptised in Wouldham Kent in 1796 to Thomas Brisley and Mary nee Mills. It was a so called private baptism which means that he was thought likely to die and thus was baptised in the family home rather than the parents waiting to take the child to church. Thomas was a labourer and married Fanny in Strood Kent in 1819. His brother James committed suicide by hanging himself in an outbuilding of Chatham Brewery where he worked. Fanny was born in Detling Kent in 1798 to John Kidney and Elizabeth. [Source Familysearch online England baptisms] Her occupation prior to marriage is unknown. She probably died in 1851.
On the 1841 and 1851 census the couple lived in Daws Alley Chatham Kent. They had a servant Sarah Hodges living with them in 1851.

William Samuel Bush and Hannah Hubbard or Hubbert (parents of Rose Hannah Bush)

William was born in 1793 to John Bush and Sarah nee  Studdome / Studham. From at least 1834 to 1851 William was a Convict Keeper on the hulks there. At other times he worked as an agricultural labourer. A recorded instance of him being a "cordwainer" seems to have been a misshearing of " convict keeper". By coincidence he would have been a convict keeper on the hulks while one of my dad's ancestors was imprisoned there awaiting transportation for killing his best friend!
He married Hannah at Sittingbourne Kent in 1813. The couple married in a Church Of England ceremony but raised their family as Bethel Wesleyans. They lived in Mile Town Sheppey (there in 1831 and 1833). In 1841 their address was Rope Walk Chatham. After Hannah's death in 1842 William married Amelia Todd. In 1851 they live at 55 Coleman Street Chatham. This address no longer exists.
Hannah was born in Hartlip Kent in 1793 to James Hubbard and Sarah nee Moses. Her sister Rosamond (known as Rose) witnessed her marriage.

* Mum's Great Great Grandparents

James Card and Charlotte Stratten (parents of Cornelius Card)

James was born in 1792 in Speldhurst. On a local census in Withyham Sussex in 1838 he claimed to have been born in that village but no baptism is recorded there for him and he was in fact born to John Card and Elizabeth in nearby Speldhurst. He married Charlotte in Plumstead Kent in 1814. James was a labourer. He died before the census of 1841. Charlotte was born in Eltham Kent in 1796 [Source FindMyPast baptisms] to Cornelius Stratten and Mary nee Mashman/ Marshman, both of whom were of Hampshire origin. She spent her childhood in Eltham Kent, in Woolwich Kent and in Greenwich Kent. Charlotte became a widow in about her early 40s with several young children at home. She moved from her cottage at Lye Wood Common by Withyham to Edenbridge in Kent. She lived in the High Street. On the 1851 census she is a charwoman and on the 1861 a nurse. [All census from LDS film images ] In 1840 clothing and other items were stolen from her by a teenage girl who was jailed for the offence.

William Peacock and Mercy Geale (parents of Mary Peacock)
William Peacock was an ag lab born in Cowfold West Sussex in 1799 [Source Familysearch IGI] to Charles Peacock and Martha nee Henty. His family moved to Edenbridge Kent when he was a young man and there he remained until his death in 1879. One of his brothers, Peter, was a draper and grocer prosecuted for unjust scales in 1875. Several of the siblings had illegitimate children.
Mercy was born in Edenbridge in 1802 to Mary Geale. Mercy may have worked as a nurse I have been told, including after marriage. One of her sons worked as an assistant to the local surgeon Mr Creasy. She died in 1878.

RICHARD HANNAN (father of John Hannan)

His son's marriage certificate tells us of his existence, and that he was a carpenter. We do not know his spouse's name. Church of Ireland baptisms and marriages for this period have been lost for Hacketstown in County Carlow Ireland where he was from. His family was Protestant rather than Catholic and of yeoman class. Burial records suggest Richard was born in 1806 and died in 1893. He owned a 17 acre estate of land in Monastill by Hacketstown. This was inherited property held jointly with a Joseph Hannan probably his brother. The potato famine caused much local poverty. Entailed estates which could not be legally sold previously but had debts were known as encumbered estates and Richard's small estate was one such. In 1851 a George Wyborne used new legislation to force the sale of the Hannan's property. Proceedings meant the sale by auction took place in the Autumn of 1854. The land was said to be worth £11 a year.
Richard was apparently unmarried. If this is correct his son, our John, was illegitimate. However the burial record may have mistaken a man long widowed with no locally remaining children for a man who had never married and had a family.

WILLIAM SHERWOOD and ANN WARREN (parents of Emily Sherwood)
William was a carpenter and at one point beerseller born in Tonbridge Kent in 1802 to William Sherwood and Jane nee Pullinger. He married Anne in Shipborne Kent in 1824. At that time he was a resident there. The couple also lived in Canning Town East London at the time of the 1861 census (26 Rathbone Street where they were beer sellers. From at least 1864 this address was the pub the Sir John Lawrence and was perhaps of that name in 1861 too),in West Malling Kent,
in Seale Kent (at 1841 census), in Plaxtol Kent, in Tonbridge Kent (1851 census- Prospect Place, which I cannot find on a modern map) and Medway where both died (1871 census 2 Mills Terrace Chatham, this still exists and can be seen on Google Maps).
William received an inheritance of a guinea from his maternal grandfather. Times must have been sometimes hard though as in 1870 a widowed William admitted himself and his grandson Alfred Sherwood into the Medway workhouse. William wore the number 49 on his shirt while an inmate, as was required. He left of his own accord in March 1871, just after Alfred left. Unfortunately at the time of his death in 1880 William was again a resident of the workhouse.

Ann was born in Shipborne in 1803 to William Warren and Charlotte nee Bennett. Her siblings were Hannah 1802, Thomas 1809 an ag lab, Lucy 1812, Nathaniel 1815, Clarissa 1818, Louisa 1822, Laura 1826 who died as a young adult in 1850,and Alfred 1826 a shopman who moved to Westminster London. Clarissa was accidentally shot in the face and blinded in one eye at the age of 16 while working as a servant girl in Shipborne. Another teenage servant had been playing with a gun he found. The case went to trial as attempted murder as the boy had made jokey threats to shoot Clarissa before the gun went off. Clarissa did not believe deliberate harm was intended to her and the shooter was found not guilty. Her employer paid her medical expenses.

Ann's other sibling William also had gun related trouble when he was convicted of stealing a gun from his employer. Sentenced to 7 years transportation he provided good character references from the vicar of Shipborne, his father's employer Thomas Jervis and 10 other local residents to get the sentence reduced to jail time in England. Both incidents must have been very worrying to my Ann. She was tough stuff though, being fined at the local court for beating with a hop pole a female neighbour of hers who had poured water on her cat. It was suggested Ann was something of a bully, continually feared by her Tonbridge neighbors. She had claimed to be acting in defence of herself and her cat.

Esther Plumpton (mother of William George Plumpton)
Esther was an unmarried servant when she had her son. She was born in Chatham Kent in 1817 to George Plumpton and Ann nee Barber. Her mother died when Esther was 3 but she gained a stepmother. At the time of the 1841 census both Esther and her little boy were in the Workhouse. In 1844 she married a labourer Joshua Weller but had no further children. With him and her son she lived at Eagle Alley off King Street Rochester at the time of the 1851 census and at 76 Burritt Street Rochester in 1861. She died in 1867 and Joshua very quickly remarried.
Esther had a half sister Catherine who worked for Lord Sefton as a servant in London. This sister managed to have sufficient estate to decide to write a will and to retire from her servant job.

Janes Thomas Brisley and Rose Hannah Bush (parents of Rose Hannah Brisley)
James was born in Chatham in 1822 to Thomas Brisley and Frances nee Kidney. He was a sawyer at Chatham Dockyard sawmill. He married Rose in Chatham 1844. In 1851 they lived at York Cottage Rochester, and in 1861 at Front Row nearby. In 1871 they lived at 46 Front Row Chatham. These buildings all no longer stand. In 1871 Rose's sister Jemima lived with them as their servant. James died in 1877.
Rose usually went by her middle name Hannah. I'd guess childhood teasing at being named Rose Bush probably put her off her first name. She was born to William Bush and Hannah nee Hubbard /Hubbert in Minster Isle of Sheppey Kent (baptised Sheerness) in 1822 [Source FamilySearch England Births and Baptisms]. She was raised a Wesleyan. In 1848 she witnessed the marriage of her sister Martha to the sailor son of an African Prince! [Source parish registers on mictofilm from Medway Archives] Her two younger half siblings, Benjamin and Jemima, lived with her and her husband at different times suggesting that she was close to them as well as her full siblings.
Her census address in 1881 when a widow was "Watmans" Buildings Chatham (probably in fact Watts Buildings almshouses on Maidstone Road which still exist) She worked as a charwoman then.
